Finding your way around

Where everything is in Haruno for Mac: the sidebar, the normal and Advanced views, the Books and account menus, the Files tab, the preview panel, keyboard shortcuts and languages.

The window at a glance

Haruno for Mac has one main window. The sidebar on the left moves between pages, and your account sits at its foot. The page you pick fills the middle, with its own buttons in the toolbar, and the chat has a side panel on its right for documents and for Haruno's work. On any other page, Show Chat Panel in the toolbar opens the chat beside the page. The menu bar holds the app's commands, including the Books menu for the month-end close. Haruno for Windows has the Portfolio and the month-end close too, in a window laid out differently; see On Windows.

After a company's first close, buttons on its page, such as Ask Haruno, put a question in the chat box and open the chat beside the page. Opening the page adds nothing to the chat box, and nothing is sent until you press Send; see chat beside a page and what Haruno knows.

The sidebar

The sidebar lists Portfolio, Chat, Files, History and Scheduled, and ⌘1 to ⌘5 go to them. Companies are not listed there: you open one from the Portfolio, or from the company list beside it. While the secure sandbox downloads, a Secure sandbox notice above the account row shows its progress, with Retry if the download fails; see the secure-sandbox download.

RowKeysWhat it is for
Portfolio⌘1Home in the normal view: every company as a card or table row, the portfolio tiles, adding companies and closing several at once.
Chat⌘2Your conversations with Haruno. It stays open behind other pages, so what you are typing is kept. On other pages, Show Chat Panel opens it beside the page.
Files⌘3The folder Haruno works in, in both views: its own Workspace folder, or one you open with ⌘O.
History⌘4Every past chat: search, sort, filter, pin, archive, delete, or carry on.
Scheduled⌘5Tasks Haruno runs at set times. A count here and on the Dock icon shows how many items they prepared await your decision.
Git⌘6Advanced view only, in a Git repository. Not used for the close.

To open a company, click its card on the Portfolio, or double-click its row in the Table layout (or select it and press Return). Before its first close its page is the setup page; after it, the company's dashboard. A list of your companies sits beside the Portfolio and beside every company's page: click a company in it to go straight to that company, without going back first. The list is in name order. Each company shows its health dot and, when the dot is amber or red, a line under its name saying why, then its cash and runway, its open findings (“no open findings” when there are none), its close state when that is not fully reconciled, and how many new files have arrived since the last close; a company with no report yet reads “No report yet” with its next step. The company you have open is shaded grey. Drag the list's edge to make it wider or narrower; in a narrow window it hides to leave room for the page. To go back to the overview, click the back chevron in the toolbar (Back to Portfolio) or press ⌘1. Haruno reopens on the page you left; if that page is gone, it opens your view's home page. More: the Portfolio screen, the company page, History, scheduled tasks and waiting for approval.

The normal view and the Advanced view

One switch, Advanced view in Settings ▸ General, decides how much of the app you see. It is off on a new Mac, and this guide calls that the normal view. Both views have the same Portfolio, company pages, Books menu, close and reports, and the same assistant. Leave it off for the month-end close and questions about your companies. Turn it on to see every step Haruno takes, choose how it asks for approval, or add custom connector servers. The change applies at once.

Switching changes nothing in your books, and it does not change the folder Chat and Files work in. Turning the view off opens the Portfolio and turns the secure sandbox back on. Turning it on starts new chats in your Default Permission Mode, Ask each time until you change it, so expect more approval requests. More: the Advanced view setting, Settings ▸ Advanced, custom servers, the secure sandbox and approvals in the normal view and the Advanced view. If a message names a Settings tab your view does not have, see messages that name a place you can't find.

Opening a chat made in another folder

In either view, opening a chat from History that was made in another folder asks Switch folder?. Switch and Resume opens that folder for Chat and Files, as File ▸ Open Folder… does: Haruno reopens on it until you open another. Cancel keeps you where you are. A chat made in the books folder opens in the current folder without asking.

The Books menu

The Books menu holds the commands for your books and the month-end close, in both views. A month-end command that does not apply to the page you are on is left out, not grayed out, so the menu changes between the Portfolio and a company. Its commands have no keyboard shortcuts.

The account row and the account menu

The row at the bottom of the sidebar shows who is signed in, with your plan's name beneath. Click it for the account menu. Signing out is not there but in Settings ▸ General ▸ Account; see sign out or switch accounts.

ItemWhat it does
Sign In… or Cancel Sign InStarts signing in through your browser, or stops a waiting sign-in.
Connectors…Opens the Connectors window, for the services Haruno can use in chat.
Settings…Opens Settings, like ⌘,.
The version lineCopies the app's version number for a message to support.

More: sign in and opening Connectors.

Your plan and billing

The plan line is all the app shows about your plan; there are no billing screens. The plan name, for example Business, sets the size of your AI allowance and is set by our team. Usage meters and signed-in devices are on the account dashboard at haruno.ai/dashboard, a website, not the portfolio dashboard. Subscriptions are arranged with our team; importing and closing use none of your allowance, but the questions for management drafted after a close do. See Usage allowance and Pricing and billing.

The Files tab

The Files tab (⌘3) shows the folder Haruno works in, like a Finder window inside the app. In either view that is Haruno's own Workspace folder, ~/Library/Application Support/Haruno/Workspace, until you open another with File ▸ Open Folder… (⌘O). It holds the documents Haruno wrote in a chat. Use it to look, preview and attach files to a chat. Opening another folder starts a new chat; the earlier one stays in History. The books are not in this tab: see what a chat can see, where the books are stored and, to take out a file you added to a company by mistake, removing a file.

Look, don't rearrange
A close reads every Excel and CSV file in a company's exports folder, so a duplicated export is read again. In the books folder, which Books ▸ Reveal Books Folder in Finder shows, don't rename, duplicate, move or delete files, or create new ones in a company's folder. Add files with Add data on the company's page, or Books ▸ Import Exports… once it has a mapping. If you trash something by mistake, put it back from the Trash.

Click a column header to sort; the Up button goes back a level. Shift-click or Command-click selects several items and Return opens them; opening more than 10 at once asks first. ⌘F finds in the list. Right-click an item for these commands; most are also in the File menu:

CommandWhat it does

Which files Haruno opens

Haruno opens documents, images, audio and video in their usual apps, such as PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV, text and Markdown files; web pages open in your browser. It never launches apps, scripts or installers. For any other file it shows Haruno can’t open “<file name>”; choose Show in Finder.

The preview panel

The side panel to the right of the chat has two tabs, shown as an eye and a checklist at its top. Preview shows a document Haruno wrote for you, or a file you chose, and is where you save, print or share it. Activities lists what Haruno is doing. The panel exists only beside Chat, so opening a document in it switches the window to Chat. Beside the other pages the chat itself opens as a panel; see chat beside a page.

You do thisWhat happens
Click Preview on a file card in the chat, or choose Live Preview on a file in the Files tabIt opens in Preview, and reloads when the file changes.
Ask Haruno for a memo, a board paragraph or a planHaruno is instructed to write it as a document in Preview.
Send Haruno a messageThe panel opens on Activities, unless you hid it in this chat.

Preview shows web pages, Markdown and PDF files inside the folder Haruno works in, not CSV files, so the adjustments log opens in your spreadsheet app. Reports are not shown here: they are tabs on a company's page, and Export… saves them. The panel button in the Chat toolbar, or ⌥⌘0, shows or hides the panel, and ⇧⌘P closes the document. See open a report and documents Haruno writes.

Save as PDF, print or share

While Preview shows a document, the toolbar button Export or share the document (a square with an arrow) turns it into a PDF: choose Save as PDF…. Export… on a report's … menu is different: it saves the report as a PDF and a web page in a folder you choose.

Menu itemWhat you get
Save as PDF…A PDF on your Mac's default paper size, always in the light colors whatever your Theme. A table too wide for the page, such as a statement with a column per month, is split into blocks of columns that each repeat the row labels, and a table that runs onto another page starts it with its headings. A PDF prints one way up: it turns landscape only when wide tables make up at least half of the document, as a statement package with many months does.
Save as Image…One or more PNG images.
Print…The macOS print dialog, printing the same PDF as Save as PDF…, so it has the same blocks of months, repeated headings and margin. The print dialog still chooses the printer, the paper and the copies; a page that does not match the paper is turned to fit it and scaled down, never enlarged.
Share…The same PDF as Save as PDF…, for Mail, Messages or AirDrop.
Copy as Rich TextThe document on the clipboard, for Mail or Word.
Open in BrowserThe document in your browser.

For a PDF file the button offers Save a Copy…, Print…, Share…, Copy Text and Open in Default App. Before you send a PDF, read before you send a PDF.

The Activities tab

Activities lists what Haruno does in the open chat. Actions is always there; the other sections appear once they have something in them. The normal view lists only files you can open; the Advanced view shows everything.

SectionWhat it lists
ActionsEach step Haruno takes, grouped under its task.
AgentsHelper tasks running in the background. Stop all ends them; the chat box's Stop button does not.
ArtifactsThe files Haruno produced in this chat.
SourcesThe websites and files Haruno read.

The other menus

Besides Books, the menu bar has Haruno, File, Edit, View, Chats, Window and Help. Most of their commands also have a button on a page or a shortcut below. Worth knowing:

MenuWhat it holds
HarunoAbout Haruno, which shows the version, and Check for Updates…, which works even with the window closed.
FileExport As saves the open chat as plain text, Markdown or a web page.
EditSearch Chats, Copy Chat and Copy Chat as Markdown.

HelpWhat's New in Haruno, Keyboard Shortcuts and Privacy Policy. No link to this guide yet: bookmark haruno.ai/docs.

Haruno also checks for updates when it opens and every hour; see updates.

Keyboard shortcuts

Help ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts (⌘/) lists your view's shortcuts; the standard ⌃⌘S and ⌘, are left out. The Books menu has none. Keys for the chat box are in keyboard shortcuts for chat.

Closing the window and quitting

Closing Haruno's window quits the app, unless Run in the background is on (the default) and a scheduled task is turned on, or Sync QuickBooks is on with a company to sync; then Haruno keeps running in the menu bar. If Haruno is replying, its helpers are working or a scheduled task is running, quitting asks Quit while Haruno is still working?. See keeping Haruno running.

Keep Haruno open while a close runs
Haruno does not ask before quitting while a close or a mapping draft is running, and quitting stops it. You can close the Close month sheet and the close carries on, but keep the window open until the result appears. After a cut-short close, check the company's close-state chip before you start the close again: months already locked stay locked.

See cancelling a close.

Languages

Haruno for Mac comes in English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese (worded for Taiwan) and Arabic (laid out right to left). It follows your Mac's language unless you choose one in Settings ▸ General ▸ Appearance ▸ Language; click Restart Now to apply it. The app's labels and messages, and Haruno's chat replies, change. Reports, sentences from the books (mapping review rows, close messages) and some sign-in errors stay in English.

On Windows

Haruno for Windows has the Portfolio, company pages and the month-end close too; see what the Windows app does. Its window differs: it has no Books menu, and it opens on the page you last used, Chat on a new install, not on the Portfolio. The sidebar lists Portfolio, Chat, Files, History, Hooks and Scheduled, and Source control in a Git repository; Ctrl+1, Ctrl+2 and Ctrl+3 open Chat, Files and History. The Advanced view switch works as on the Mac, the Help menu has a built-in User Guide, and the app comes in English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese and Arabic. See differences from the Mac and chat on Windows.

Next steps

Put the tour to work: close a first month, learn the chat, read the Portfolio and company pages, or set Haruno up the way you like it.
