Settings
Every setting in Haruno for Mac, tab by tab: its exact name, what it starts at, what it changes, and what Delete local data… erases.
Open Settings
Press ⌘, anywhere in Haruno, or choose Haruno ▸ Settings… in the menu bar or Settings… from the account menu at the bottom of the sidebar. Settings opens in its own window with two tabs, General and Books; the Advanced view adds a third, Advanced. There is no Save button: a switch or menu is kept at once, and a typed number when you press Return or leave the field.
Settings are saved on this Mac, not in your Haruno account, so set your New company defaults on each Mac you close months on. Most changes apply at once; Language needs a restart, and Use memory, Sandboxed Engine and allowed hosts apply from the next new chat (⌘N). The two views are explained in Finding your way around.
What is not in Settings
| You are looking for | Where it is |
|---|---|
| Connectors | Their own window: account row ▸ Connectors…. Web search has no switch: it is on whenever you are signed in. |
| Where the books are stored | Settings ▸ Books ▸ Portfolio location shows the folder and moves it. The Books menu's Reveal Books Folder in Finder shows it too. |
| The folder Chat and Files work in | File ▸ Open Folder… (⌘O), in both views. |
| A company's reporting currency, fiscal year-end or tax details | That company's Company details sheet. |
| Your plan and billing | General ▸ Account shows the plan's name only; billing is arranged with our team. |
| Which month to close | Nothing to set, and no setting turns the lock off. |
| Your version | The account menu's version row (click to copy), or Haruno ▸ About Haruno. |
| Keyboard shortcuts | Help ▸ Keyboard Shortcuts (⌘/). |
See Connectors, Where the books are stored, Choose the folder, How billing works and What a close is.
When a message sends you somewhere you can't find
| The message says | Go here instead |
|---|---|
| “…Retry in Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ Security.” (in the normal view) | The normal view has no Advanced tab. Click Retry in the Secure sandbox notice at the foot of the sidebar, or above the chat box while the sidebar is hidden. |
| “… tools are off this session — its saved sign-in was rejected. Reconnect it in Connectors.” | Connectors is its own window, not a Settings tab: account row ▸ Connectors…. Sign that connector in again there. |
| The Finish setup button on the Scheduled screen, in the normal view | It points at the Advanced tab, which the normal view lacks. Follow the Secure sandbox notice at the foot of the sidebar, and click Retry there if it stopped. |
More messages: Troubleshooting.
General
General is the same in both views, except that the Advanced view adds Permissions and Automations. Its controls:
| Section | Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account | Sign in to Haruno / Sign out | Signed out | Links this Mac to your Haruno account; chat needs it. |
| Foot of the tab | Delete local data… | — | Erases what Haruno keeps on this Mac, books included. |
| Below Software Update | Advanced view | Off | Shows more settings and controls, and the details of each step. The assistant is the same in both views. |
| Permissions (Advanced view) | Default Permission Mode | Ask each time | The approval mode new chats start in. |
| Appearance | Theme | System | System, Light or Dark. |
| Appearance | Chat Font Size | 13 pt | 11 to 22 pt, chat text only. |
| Appearance | Language | System | System, English, 日本語, 繁體中文 or العربية. Haruno replies in it too. |
| Automations (Advanced view) | Run in the background | On | Keeps Haruno in the menu bar when you close the window, while a scheduled task is on, or Sync QuickBooks is on with a company to sync. |
| Below Appearance | Launch at login | Off | Reopens Haruno when you log in. |
| Automations (Advanced view) | Notify when an automation runs | On | Notifies you when a scheduled task starts and finishes. |
| Software Update | Check for updates automatically | On | Checks when Haruno opens and every hour. |
| Software Update | Download and install updates automatically | Off | Installs a downloaded update when you quit, instead of asking. |
Account
Signed in, the section is one row: your email with your plan beneath it, when your account has one, and Sign out at the end of the row. If it also shows “Re-sign in to finish updating your account.”, click Re-sign in and approve in the browser again. Signed out, a message you send is answered with “You're not signed in. Sign in to Haruno in Settings (⌘,) to start.” Signing in, its time limit and the device limit: Sign in.
Signing out is not deleting: your books, chats, memory and settings stay, and anyone who later signs in under the same macOS user works with them. Before you hand the Mac on, see Handing over a Mac; to switch accounts, Sign out or switch accounts.
Advanced view
Leave Advanced view off for the month-end close and questions about your companies; turn it on to see every step, choose how Haruno asks for approval or add custom connector servers. It adds Permissions and Automations to General and Memory and Suggestions to the Advanced tab; the Memory, Suggestions and Automations switches keep their values, and keep applying, while the view is off. Turning it off opens the Portfolio and turns the secure sandbox back on. Your Default Permission Mode, allowed hosts and custom servers are kept while the view is off, and the hosts and servers keep applying to new chats, so remove any hosts you no longer want before you switch. Turning it on starts new chats in your Default Permission Mode, Ask each time unless you change it. More: The normal view and the Advanced view.
Permissions (Advanced view only)
Default Permission Mode offers Ask each time (the default), Allow all, Deny all and Automatic. The normal view is fixed at Automatic. To switch the chat in front of you, click + to the left of the chat box and open Permissions, or press ⌃⌘P to cycle modes. See Permissions.
Appearance and language
With Theme set to Dark, or to System while your Mac is in Dark Mode, documents in the preview panel are drawn dark. A PDF saved or shared from the panel, and a printout from it, is always drawn in the light colors, so you do not need to switch Theme first. A Language change applies after you click Restart Now. Reports and sentences from the books stay in English (Languages).
Memory (Advanced tab)
Use memory covers short notes and the search of earlier chats, in one memory shared by every company. It is on the Advanced tab: the normal view does not show it, and keeps it as set. Turning it off applies from the next new chat and deletes nothing; there is no window yet to view or edit memory. See Memory.
Suggestions (Advanced tab)
With Suggest what to do next on, Haruno sometimes offers a related next step in a Suggestion card with Yes, Reply… and No thanks. It joins the conversation only if you accept or reply. To write one, Haruno sends a short extra request based on the conversation; turning the switch off stops both from the next reply. The switch is on the Advanced tab: the normal view does not show it, and keeps it as set.
Automations: keeping Haruno running
Scheduled tasks (Scheduled, ⌘5) start only while Haruno is running. With Run in the background on and a task turned on, closing the window leaves Haruno in the menu bar; so does Sync QuickBooks, once it is on with a company to sync. Otherwise Haruno quits. Launch at login, in both views, brings Haruno back after a restart, so tasks pick up again and anything a shutdown interrupted recovers. Notify when an automation runs announces starts and finishes; anything a task prepares for your review is announced either way. Run in the background and Notify when an automation runs are in the Automations section, which only the Advanced view shows; both are on by default, and the normal view keeps them as set. See When tasks run.
Books
Books holds Portfolio location, which says where the books are kept; New company defaults, the suggestions Haruno offers when you set up a company; and, when your organization has QuickBooks companies, QuickBooks, the email after scheduled syncs.
Portfolio location
Books folder shows where the portfolio's books are kept: by default ~/Library/Application Support/Haruno/Books. It is one place for the whole portfolio on this Mac, whichever folder you open for Chat and Files. Reveal in Finder shows it. Change… moves the books, whole, into an empty folder in your home folder or on a drive; Use Default Location, shown after a move, asks “Move the books back to Haruno’s own folder?” and moves them back. A move ends any chat in progress; you can reopen it from History.
Haruno refuses a folder that is not empty, is inside the books or holds them, is inside its own data folder, or overlaps the folder Chat and Files work in. A folder in Documents, Desktop, iCloud Drive or another synced place asks “Move the books to this folder?” first, because syncing the books while Haruno writes to them can damage them; Move Anyway goes on. Change… and Use Default Location are dimmed, with the reason under them, while a close, a mapping draft or a QuickBooks sync runs. Delete local data… erases the books wherever they are.
New company defaults
These are your practice's standard answers to setup questions, offered only as suggestions. As the tab puts it: “Answering the company's own setup questions replaces these for that company, and changing them here never restates a month that is already closed.”
| Setting | Default | Where Haruno offers it | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Materiality | 1,000 | The mapping review form, only with a reconciliation workbook; without one, the checks use 1,000 whatever you set here. | Below it, a missing schedule is not worth chasing; also the tolerance of detail-to-ledger checks. Never softens a reconciliation status. |
| Capitalization threshold | 2,500 | The review form, only when the workbook has a fixed-asset or prepaid schedule. | At or above it, a purchase is capitalized; the policy checks test the schedules against it. |
| Useful life (months) | 60 | Not offered today. | — |
| Depreciation | Straight line | Not offered today. | Not a choice: the only method Haruno computes. |
| Currency | USD | Company details, for a new company or one whose files state no currency. | Reporting currency: never converted, fixed once a month is closed. |
| Fiscal year starts | January | Company details, as the year-end suggestion: the month before. | Where quarters and years begin. Year-to-date follows the company's fiscal year. |
Enter both amounts whole, even for a company presented in thousands: 1000 means a balance of 1,000. Company details offers currency and year-end with Use these (then Save), the review form with a button such as Use the books default, 2500; nothing counts until you click it or type a value, and a company that already has an answer keeps it: change that in its Company details or its mapping. See Where the suggestions come from and What is never decided for you.
Limits of the defaults today
- One set per Mac: you can't keep a second set for a group of companies, such as those reporting in GBP.
- The Currency menu lists USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, AUD and JPY; Company details lists every currency.
QuickBooks
When you are signed in and your organization has QuickBooks companies, Books has a QuickBooks section with one switch, Email me a summary after scheduled syncs. It is off until you turn it on, it belongs to the account you are signed in with, and the Sync QuickBooks task in Scheduled has the same switch. While it is on, Haruno emails you at your account's address (“You'll get updates by email at …”) how each company's scheduled syncs went and which months they brought in. A summary never includes amounts, and a Sync you press yourself sends none. Turning the switch off withdraws the summaries not yet sent. The section stays while the switch is on, so you can always turn it off.
Advanced
The Advanced tab appears only in the Advanced view. Its sections are Memory (Use memory, on by default) and Suggestions (Suggest what to do next, on by default), described under General above, and Security, which holds the Sandboxed Engine switch and your allowed hosts.
Sandboxed Engine
Sandboxed Engine is on by default. The tab describes it: “Run the agent inside an isolated virtual machine. It can only see this project's folder (read-write) and its own session state — nothing else on your Mac. If the sandbox can't start, new sessions fail instead of silently running without isolation. Takes effect on the next new session.”
- Under the switch, the folder Chat and Files work in is marked (read-write, isolated): Haruno's Workspace folder until you open another. The sandbox is also shown the books, read-only except the mapping files.
- While the sandbox downloads, a Secure sandbox row shows progress, and offers Retry if the download fails and trying again can help.
More in Security and If the sandbox won't start.
Allowed hosts
Inside the sandbox, the assistant reaches only Haruno's service, common package registries and the services of connectors you turned on; other sites ask first (Websites). The list under Sandboxed Engine adds hosts every new chat may reach without asking. Type a host name such as example.com, or *.example.com for everything under it, and click Add; Always allow this website on a website prompt adds one too. Changes apply from the next new chat.
| You see | What it means |
|---|---|
| “Enter a hostname like example.com or *.example.com — no IP addresses, spaces, ports, or URLs.” | Type only the host name: no https://, path or port. |
| Remove All asks “Remove all N allowed hosts?” | New chats then reach only the built-in allowlist. |
Updates
Haruno checks for a new version when it opens and every hour after that, and tells you when one is ready. To check now, choose Haruno ▸ Check for Updates…; it works even with the window closed. Download and install updates automatically (off) installs a downloaded update the next time you quit instead of asking first; it is dimmed unless Check for updates automatically is on. An update replaces the app only, leaving your books, settings and sign-in as they are, and comes from Haruno itself, not the Mac App Store. More in Installation; updates on Windows are in Haruno on Windows.
Delete local data
Delete local data… (Settings ▸ General, in both views, signed in or out) erases what Haruno keeps on this Mac, including every company's books, then quits and reopens Haruno as new. There is no undo. Apart from signing this Mac out it contacts no one: access you granted to connectors at Google or other providers, and your Haruno account, are untouched.
Before you start
- Export the reports you may send again (Export… saves a PDF and a web page), copy out export files you have nowhere else, and check that your Time Machine backup is current.
- Sign out of connectors you are done with in the Connectors window (each row's ⋯ menu). For Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack, that also asks the provider to end Haruno's access.
See Export the books and Disconnecting.
Delete local data, step by step
- Press ⌘, and click General.
- At the foot of the tab, click Delete local data….
- At “Delete all Haruno data on this Mac?”, click Delete and quit, or Cancel (or press Return) to keep everything.
- Haruno signs you out, quits and reopens with an empty Portfolio, not signed in, in the normal view.
What it removes
| Removed from this Mac | Details |
|---|---|
| The books | Every company, wherever you have moved the books: copied exports, ledger, mappings and review answers, company details (including EINs), close and lock history, adjustments logs, and the links to their QuickBooks companies. |
| Chats | History, pasted images and Haruno's copies of attached files. The originals stay where they are. |
| Memory, scheduled tasks and playbooks | Everything remembered; your tasks and their run history; your saved playbooks; the Sync QuickBooks schedule. |
| Sign-ins | Your Haruno sign-in (this Mac is also revoked) and every connector sign-in on this Mac. |
| Settings | All of them, though Launch at login and the two Software Update switches can keep their values. Haruno may reopen in the language you last chose while Language shows System; if so, choose it again. |
| The secure sandbox | It downloads again when Haruno reopens; the chat waits for it. |
What it does not remove
| Not removed | To remove it |
|---|---|
| Access you granted at Google, Slack, Discord, LinkedIn and other providers | Remove Haruno in each provider's account settings. Help ▸ Privacy Policy lists where for the main providers. |
| Your Haruno account and plan | Delete account and data on the account dashboard. |
| Your original export files, and reports or copies you exported | Haruno copied the exports and never moved them. Delete these in Finder. |
| Files in the Workspace folder and in folders you opened | Left alone: they are your files, so documents Haruno wrote in a chat stay. |
| Chats deleted from History, files removed with Remove from Company or moved to the Trash from the Files tab | Empty the macOS Trash. |
| Time Machine and other backups | Untouched. |
Sign out, delete local data, or delete the account
| What happens to | Sign out | Delete local data… | Delete account and data (dashboard) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your sign-in on this Mac | Ended; this Mac is revoked | Ended; this Mac is revoked | Ended with the account |
| Books, chats, memory, settings and connector sign-ins on this Mac | Kept | Erased | Kept (use Delete local data… on each Mac) |
| Access granted at providers | Kept | Kept | Kept |
| Your Haruno account | Kept | Kept | Deleted at once. Any subscription is cancelled immediately without a refund; usage and billing records are kept without your name or email |
To remove everything, delete local data on each Mac and delete the account on the account dashboard. Deleting the account is not how to cancel a subscription: see Cancellation.
Handing over a Mac, or removing Haruno
Signing out is not enough when someone else will use the Mac. To leave nothing of your practice behind:
- Export the reports and copy out the files you need to keep.
- Sign out of each connector, and remove Haruno at any provider its sign-out does not reach.
- Use Delete local data….
- Delete what you do not want to leave in the Workspace folder and in any folder you opened: Delete local data… leaves them alone.
- To remove the app too, quit Haruno once it has reopened and move it from Applications to the Trash.
If the Mac is already out of your hands, revoke it under Account ▸ Devices on the account dashboard; that ends its sign-in only, and what is stored on it stays (Sign out a computer you can't reach). Removing the app alone leaves your data behind (Remove Haruno from your Mac).
Removing one company, or memory only
Delete local data… is all or nothing. It cannot erase a single company's books (you can archive a company and delete its data from Archived instead: Removing a company) or clear only its memory; you can ask Haruno in a chat to forget a note (Memory).
On Windows
The Windows app's Settings has General, Connectors and Shortcuts tabs, and Advanced when the Advanced view is on. It has no Books tab: the gear button named Books on the Portfolio opens a sheet with Portfolio location, New company defaults and, when your organization has QuickBooks companies, QuickBooks, the email after scheduled syncs. The Advanced view switch is the last item in General, and chat text is sized with Chat zoom, 80 to 160%. See Differences from Haruno for Mac.
